Mountain Lions Fall at No. 5 Mavericks
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs scored the first 10 points of the game against fifth-ranked Colorado Mesa, but after the opening five the minutes the Mavericks took control as the Mountain Lions (5-8 / 4-5 RMAC) fell 64-46 to Colorado Mesa (14-0 / 1-0 RMAC) at Brownson Arena.
UCCS shot 50 percent from the field and kept the Mavericks off the scoreboard for the first five minutes of the game, led by Jessica Kienitz's four points. Colorado Mesa shot 61 percent from the field in the final 15 minutes of the half and went into halftime with a 33-18 advantage against the Mountain Lions.
Abby Kirchoff was limited to two first half points, but scored 15 points in the second half to extend her double-digit scoring streak to 19 games. Kienitz finished the game with 11 points and matched her season-high with five field goals. Sam Patterson matched her season-high with 10 rebounds and added two steals to lead the UCCS defense.
The Mountain Lions held Sharaya Selsor, the second-leading scorer in Division II, to 12 points below her season average. The Mavericks also shot more than 10 percent lower than their season averages from the field and the three-point line. UCCS finished with a rebounding advantage for the second straight night.
Up Next: The Mountain Lions will return home to begin a four-game homestand against Colorado Mines on Jan. 17. The Orediggers (5-9 / 2-6 RMAC) fell to Regis earlier tonight 89-77.
