RMAC's Top Scorers Meet Tonight in Grand Junction
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - With its third win in the last four games, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team will look to continue its momentum in the toughest test this season when the Mountain Lions (5-7 / 4-4 RMAC) take on No. 5 Colorado Mesa (13-0 / 9-0 RMAC) in Brownson Arena. Tip-off in Grand Junction is set for 5:30 p.m.
The game will feature the top two scorers in the RMAC this season, who both rank in the top three of NCAA Division II statistics. Colorado Mesa's Sharaya Selsor is leading the conference and second in the nation with 25.3 points per game, while UCCS' Abby Kirchoff is second in the conference and third in the nation with 24.0 points per game. Both student-athletes hit 1,000 career points on the same night (Dec. 21) and were the RMAC Players of the Week after that weekend.
A win tonight for the Mountain Lions would move Head Coach Corey Laster into a tie for second in UCCS career coaching victories. His 51 wins is one short of Dave Murphy's 52 victories from the 1998-99 through 2001-02 seasons. Laster is on pace to set the program record for win percentage.
The Mountain Lions defeated Western State 70-52 last night in the best team defensive performance of the season. UCCS held the Mountaineers to 52 points and 18 percent from the three-point line, and outrebounded Western State by 15 boards. It was the sixth straight win the series between the two teams and the fourth straight win for the Mountain Lions in Gunnison.
Kirchoff led the UCCS offense again with 20 points last night for her third straight 2-point game. She's scored 10-plus points in the last 18 games since Feb. 16, 2013. Kirchoff shot 73 percent from the field last night with eight-of-11 shooting from the field, and went four-of-five from the three-point line.
Fans can follow tonight's game through live stats from Colorado Mesa, or through live video streaming through America One Sports.
