UCCS Posts Best Defensive Performance in Win at Western State
GUNNISON, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball allowed a season-low 52 points and Abby Kirchoff led the offense with her third straight 20-point game as the Mountain Lions (5-7 / 4-4 RMAC) defeated Western State (5-9 / 5-4 RMAC) by a 70-52 margin tonight in Paul Wright Gym. It was the lowest offensive output for a Mountain Lion opponent this season.
After a slow start to the game, the Mountain Lions scored 16 unanswered points in a five-minute span late in the first half and led 33-22 at the break. UCCS shot 52 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes, with a three-of-four performance from the field from Shannon Kelly in her first action in more than a month.
Western State made its first jumper of the second half before UCCS scored 10 straight points to take a 43-24 lead with 17 minutes left to play. The Mountain Lions led by more than 20 points for most of the second half until the Mountaineers went six-of-six at the free throw line in the final minute to cut the margin down to 18 points by the end of the game.
Kirchoff went three-of-four from beyond the arc and eight-of-11 overall from the field to finish with 20 points. It was her 18th straight game with double-digit points and it improved her career total to 1,042 points. She needs 51 points to move into fifth in all-time program records.
UCCS outrebounded Western State 41-26, and the 15-rebound advantage was the most in a conference game since Jan. 28, 2011. Sam Patterson led both teams with nine rebounds and went three-of-three from the field.
Tonight was the third win in the last four games for UCCS, and the sixth straight win in the series against Western State.
Up Next: The Mountain Lions travel to No. 5 Colorado Mesa for a 5:30 p.m., game on Friday in Grand Junction. The Mavericks (13-0 / 9-0 RMAC) defeated Colorado State-Pueblo 83-42 earlier tonight.
