Mountain Lions Open 2014 at CSU-Pueblo
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team will open 2014 on the road in a 5:30 p.m., matchup at rival Colorado State-Pueblo on Saturday in Massari Arena.
The Mountain Lions (4-6 / 3-3 RMAC) will be playing for its third straight victory, and will be doing it against one of two teams with an undefeated conference record this season. The ThunderWolves are receiving votes in the latest WBCA / USA Today Division II Top 25 national poll and are 4-0 at home this season.
Abby Kirchoff, the defending RMAC Defensive Player of the Week, is coming off one of the best offensive performances in program history. She scored 35 points, made 16 free throws and reached 1,000 career points in a 79-75 win against Western New Mexico on Dec. 21, and needs 15 points to move into seventh in UCCS career scoring records. Kirchoff is third in Division II with 24.6 points per game.
UCCS, the preseason favorite in the RMAC Coaches' Poll, has begun to put together the team performances that will put them in position to make a run for the conference championship. In the last three games, the defense has held opponents to 30 percent or lower from the three-point line, while the offense has scored 75 points in each of those games.
CSU-Pueblo and UCCS are travel partners, which mean that both schools have played the same teams in the conference season. The ThunderWolves are holding conference opponents to 55.4 points per game, good for first in the league. Katie Nehf is ranked No. 13 in the nation with 2.58 blocked shots per game.
Fans can follow the game through live stats through Colorado State-Pueblo, but stats for mobile devices will need to wait until game time to access the link for live stats. M.J. Arjomandi will provide live audio commentary, and the game will be available on pay-per-view video streaming through America One Sports.
