Mountain Lions Take Winning Streak to Highlands
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's basketball team, the winners of its last three games, will begin the month of February at New Mexico Highlands when the Mountain Lions (12-6 / 8-5 RMAC) face the Cowboys (10-8 / 7-7 RMAC) at 8 p.m., in the Joe A. Wilson Complex in Las Vegas, N.M.
The Mountain Lions have won 12 games this season and are four wins away from the single season record of 16 set in the 2006-07 season. UCCS also stands alone in fourth in the RMAC standings with eight games to play after its win last night at Western New Mexico and the loss by Colorado Christian at Western State. The top four teams in the standings will host one of the quarterfinal round games in the RMAC tournament on March 4.
UCCS is leading the conference with 41.8 rebounds per game and have been outrebounded in only four games this season. The Mountain Lions have outrebounded opponents by at least 10 boards in 12 games this season and are second in the RMAC in rebounding margin with an average advantage of 8.8 rebounds per game.
Derrick White increased his career scoring total to 761 points, 100 points out of the top 10 career records for UCCS. He's also 43 points away from moving into the top five records in sophomore scoring. White's 278 career free throws is already third in UCCS records, and he's 11 free throws away from tying Academic All-America Patrick Hannaway for second.
Alex Welsh has nearly matched his rebounding total from his freshman year with 103 rebounds this season. He's leading the Mountain Lions in rebounds per game and is sixth in the RMAC with 4.9 defensive rebounds per game.
New Mexico Highlands has scored at least 80 points in the last five games and is 3-2 in that span. The Cowboys are two games behind the Mountain Lions in the standings and will look to rebound after a 99-81 loss last night to Colorado State-Pueblo. Mannie Cass is leading Highlands with 18.3 points and 5.2 rebounds per game and scored 17 points against UCCS earlier this season on Dec. 20.
