UCCS Wins 3rd Straight, 12th Overall, in 20-Point Victory at Western N.M.
SILVER CITY, N.M. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's basketball (12-6 / 9-5 RMAC) continued one of its best seasons in program history with its 12th win in an 81-61 victory at Western New Mexico (1-16 / 1-13 RMAC) tonight at the WNMU Fieldhouse. Derrick White led both teams with 24 points.
The Mountain Lions won their third straight game and shot 48 percent from the field and 47 percent from the three-point line. The 12 wins this season is tied for third in single-season records and is four wins away from the program record with eight games left in the regular season.
UCCS moved alone into fourth in the RMAC standings with tonight's win and the 76-71 loss by Colorado Christian at Western State. The top four teams at the end of the regular season will host a game in the quarterfinal round of the RMAC tournament.
The Mountain Lions trailed by nine points early at 11-2 as the Mustangs scored on five of its first six possessions. UCCS tied it with a nine-point rally, with the last seven points from Alex Welsh, with 15:24 to play in the first half. The Mountain Lions took their first lead a minute later, and held a 21-20 lead at the under-10 timeout. White's layup out of the timeout sparked a 22-6 run for UCCS, and the Mountain Lions kept the lead at 48-36 at halftime.
UCCS shot 61 percent from the field in the first half and was led by 14 points from White and 10 points from Welsh. The Mountain Lions never trailed in the second half and led by more than 15 points in the final nine minutes of the game.
White finished with his third 20-point performance in the last four games and the eighth time this season. He led the Mountain Lions with eight rebounds and led the team in assists for the 14th time this season with four tonight.
Welsh scored 17 points tonight on six-of-10 shooting from the field and Tim Billingsley added 10 points to round out the double-digit scorers. The Mountain Lions outrebounded the Mustangs 42-28 and have outrebounded opponents by at least 10 boards in 12 games this season.
Up Next: UCCS will travel to New Mexico Highlands for an 8 p.m., game on Friday. The Cowboys lost to Colorado State-Pueblo 99-81 tonight.
