UCCS Goes for Season Sweep of Western NM Tonight
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's basketball (11-6 / 8-5 RMAC) will continue one of its most successful seasons in program history tonight when the Mountain Lions take on Western New Mexico (1-15 / 1-12 RMAC) at 7:30 p.m., in the WNMU Fieldhouse.
The Mountain Lions' 11 wins this season matches for fourth in UCCS season records, and another win tonight would put them in a tie for third. The 12 wins would be the most since the record-setting 16-win season in 2006-07. A win would also make it a sweep against the Mustangs this season after an 82-66 win in the Gallogly Events Center on Dec. 21.
UCCS is tied for fourth in the RMAC standings and is two games ahead of ninth in the conference standings with nine games to play. The Mountain Lions are in position to qualify for the RMAC tournament for the sixth time in program history, and could host a quarterfinal game with a top four finish in the standings.
Derrick White is averaging just under 20 points per game after he scored 47 points in 45 minutes last weekend against Black Hills State and Chadron State. He came within two points of his season high against the Yellow Jackets on Friday night and then scored 18 points against the Eagles with limited action in the second half. White ranks in the top five of the conference in scoring, blocked shots and assists.
Alex Welsh is leading the rebounding effort for the Mountain Lions with 6.6 per game and is sixth among the conference leaders. He recorded a double-double against Western New Mexico earlier this season with 21 points and 10 rebounds, the first of back-to-back double-doubles.
Marcos Castrillo leads Western New Mexico with 13 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. The Mustangs are playing at home for the fourth weekend of new year.
