Mountain Lions Take Five-Game Win Streak to Mesa
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The chance to win the sixth straight game awaits the University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's basketball team tonight when the Mountain Lions (9-3 / 6-2 RMAC) take on Colorado Mesa (7-6 / 5-4 RMAC) at Brownson Arena. Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m.
A win tonight would also be the first 10-win season for the Mountain Lions since the 2009-10 season. It would tie for fifth in program records for season victories, and be six shy of the record of 16 wins in the 2006-07 season.
UCCS has scored at least 80 points in each of the five games during the winning streak, and has shot 50 percent or better from the field in four of those games. The Mountain Lions have raised their scoring average by a full two points in the two games of 2014, and are now on pace to break the previous program record for points per game by four points.
While the offense is set to enter the UCCS record books, the defense continues to lead the RMAC in several categories. The Mountain Lions are holding opponents to 42 percent from the field and averaging 43.3 rebounds per game to lead the conference, and are second in the league in rebounding margin (+10.3) and three-point defense (30%). UCCS has outrebounded its last five opponents by at least 12 rebounds and has only been out-rebounded twice in the season.
Derrick White is least five Mountain Lions who are averaging nine points or more with 17.3 points per game. If he maintains that average through the rest of the season, and not accounting for any postseason games, White would finish sixth in program season records for points and move into ninth in career scoring records.
Three of the eight RMAC Offensive Players of the Week this season will be playing tonight on the same court, including the last two honorees. White is the defending player of the week and Alex Welsh earned the award during the second week of the regular season on Nov. 18. They'll be facing Colorado Mesa's Ryan Stephan, who earned the award in the final week of 2013. A three are sophomores who were in the same recruiting class in the Denver area.
Colorado Mesa is 5-2 at home this season, but have dropped its last three games overall. The Mavericks fell last night at home 84-67 to Colorado State-Pueblo.
Fans can follow tonight's game with live stats from Colorado Mesa and with live video streaming through America One Sports.
