Mountain Lions Aim to Continue Home Success Tonight
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - After its second straight home win, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team will close out the 2013 calendar year tonight when the Mountain Lions (3-6 / 2-3 RMAC) take on Western New Mexico (4-6 / 1-4 RMAC) at the Gallogly Events Center. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
Abby Kirchoff has the chance to move up in the UCCS career scoring charts with 16 points tonight. She would tie Lauren Wolfinger's 981 points in her four year career that ended last season for eighth in UCCS records. A career night of 35 points would also move Kirchoff into the 1,000-point club in program history.
The Mountain Lions shot 59 percent and scored 77 points, the best marks of the season in both categories, in a 77-55 win against New Mexico Highlands last night. UCCS also shot 43 percent from the three-point line - the second best performance of the season - and has held its last three opponents to 23 percent from the arc. The three-point defense is nearly twice as good as the first three games of the season when opponents shot 41 percent.
UCCS has averaged 45.3 rebounds and a rebounding margin of +10.7 in the three home games this season. The Mountain Lions have also scored at least 75 points in the three home games this year, the longest stretch since the end of the 2000-01 season and the beginning of the 2001-02 season.
Western New Mexico will be playing to end a three-game losing streak after a 91-61 loss last night to Colorado State-Pueblo. The Mustangs are led by Ashley Mitchell's 14.4 points per game, while the rebounding effort is anchored by Nalani Hernandez's 7.8 rebounds per game.
