Mountain Lions Win Second Straight Home Game
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs shot 59 percent from the field and posted its best field goal defense of the season in a 77-55 win against New Mexico Highlands tonight in the Gallogly Events Center. Abby Kirchoff led the Mountain Lions (3-6 / 2-3 RMAC) with 18 points and nine rebounds.
The Mountain Lions never trailed during the game after taking an early 9-2 lead against the Cowgirls (4-4 / 1-4 RMAC). UCCS shot 64 percent from the field in the first half on 16-of-25 shooting, and 60 percent from the three-point line (six-of-10). Gabby Ramirez led all scorers at the half with 11 points off the bench, helped by 3 three-pointers.
New Mexico Highlands cut the UCCS lead down to nine points just more than two minutes into the second half before the Mountain Lions put together a 10-3 run. Sammi Gentile scored eight points in the second half with perfect performances from the field (three-of-three) and free-throw line (two-of-two).
Kirchoff led the UCCS scoring effort for the ninth time this season and improved her career scoring total to 965 points. She now needs 16 points to move into eighth in career scoring records and 35 points to become the eighth Mountain Lion with 1,000 career points.
Jeri Pikul scored a season-high 14 points and tied Jessica Kienitz for the team lead with four assists. Ramirez finished the night with 13 points to lead both benches.
The Mountain Lions posted season highs tonight in field goal percentage and points and the second-best three-point percentage of the season. UCCS improved to 5-2 against New Mexico Highlands at home since the 2005-06 season.
Up Next: UCCS will finish the 2013 calendar year on Saturday with Western New Mexico at 5:30 p.m., in the Gallogly Events Center. The Mustangs (4-6 / 1-4 RMAC) fell to Colorado State-Pueblo 71-54 earlier tonight in Pueblo, Col.
