Mountain Lions Wrap Up Nonconference Season Against Mavericks
DENVER, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs (1-2) will aim to finish the nonconference season at .500 when the Mountain Lions take on No. 24 Minnesota State (2-1) at 5 p.m., in the Metro State Classic at the Auraria Events Center.
The Mountain Lions are coming off of an 83-74 loss to Nebraska-Kearney last night in the classic, while the Mavericks defeated Metro State 75-63 in the second game on Friday night. Abby Kirchoff led UCCS with 28 points, while Ali Wilkson scored 24 points as one of two Mavericks with at least 20 points.
Saturday will be the first meeting between the two teams in program history, and it comes with both teams mentioned in the latest WBCA/USA Today Division II national poll. The Mavericks are No. 24, a drop from its No. 23 preseason ranking, while the Mountain Lions are receiving votes for the second straight week. Tonight will also be the second team for UCCS this season mentioned in the national poll - California Baptist was receiving votes at the time of the Mountain Lions' 76-64 win last Saturday.
UCCS has scored 70 points in each of its first three games, and is starting the season with three 70-point games for the first time in program history. Kirchoff is averaging just under 24 points per game for the Mountain Lions and has 850 career points in her third season. She moved into No. 10 in career records last night and needs two more to tie for ninth in UCCS history.
Fans can follow tonight's game with live stats through Metro State, live audio through USTREAM and live video through America One Sports. The game will also be shown on the TVs at Clyde's, on the lower level of the University Center on the UCCS campus.
