Kirchoff Matches Career High in Loss to Lopers
DENVER, Colo. - Abby Kirchoff matched her career-high with 28 points and finished one rebound shy of the double-double as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (1-2) fell 83-74 to Nebraska-Kearney (2-2) tonight at the Auraria Events Center in the Metro State Classic.
Kirchoff went 11-of-12 at the free throw line and seven-of-15 from the field while leading the Mountain Lions with nine rebounds. Jessica Kienitz led the UCCS defensive effort with six rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals. She entered tonight's game with only one career blocked shot.
Nebraska-Kearney scored the first six points of the game and led by nine points at 13-4 with 15:47 left in the first half. The Mountain Lions put together a 9-2 run in the next four minutes, with four points from Tori Fisher, to pull within two points at 15-13 at the 11:35 mark. The Lopers took as large of a lead as 13 points during the first half, but UCCS brought back to seven points at 44-37 at halftime.
The Mountain Lions tied the game at 60-60 with 7:53 left to play, helped by a small 7-2 run sparked by Carrie Christopher's second collegiate three-pointer from the top of the arc. Nebraska-Kearney scored eight of the next nine points of the game, and despite five straight points from Abby Kirchoff to make it a two-point game with 4:42 left, the Lopers closed it out in the final minutes in the 83-74 decision.
Kirchoff finished with her second 20-point game of the early season and the 11th of her career. Kellie Krueger finished with 11 points underneath the basket and with seven rebounds, six on the defensive side.
Up Next: UCCS finishes the nonconference season on Saturday against Minnesota State at 5 p.m., in Denver. The Mavericks defeated Metro State 75-63 in the second game of tonight's classic.
