Mountain Lions Face Former RMAC Foe Tonight in Denver
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs (1-1) will face a former member of the RMAC on Friday when the Mountain Lions face Nebraska-Kearney (2-1) in the Metro State Classic. Tip-off at the Auraria Events Center is set for 5 p.m., in downtown Denver.
UCCS, who is receiving votes in the first regular season WBCA/USA Today Division II national poll, is coming off a 76-64 win against California Baptist, who was also receiving votes in the poll. The Mountain Lions were also picked to win the RMAC in the preseason coaches' poll in October.
Nebraska-Kearney is in its second season as a member of the Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association, after an 18-year membership in the RMAC. The Lopers are in the midst of a seven-game road trip that started last weekend with a 1-1 trip in Montana.
Abby Kirchoff led a balanced scoring effort last weekend in the UCCS Classic and averaged 21.5 points per game. She was one of four Mountain Lions to average 10 or more points, and also led the team in assists and steals. Tori Fisher pulled down 15 rebounds in the season-opener against Bemidji State and is leading the team with nine rebounds per game in the early season.
Friday's game will count for postseason consideration for the Mountain Lions. Although no longer a member of the same conference or in the same NCAA region, the teams are in bordering states, which will count as an in-region contest for postseason consideration in March.
Fans can follow live stats of tonight's game. M.J. Arjomandi will have the call for tonight's game on the UCCS Women's Basketball USTREAM channel, and pay-per-view video will be available through America One Sports.
