Five Score in Double Figures as Mountain Lions Win Against Lancers
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs (1-1) never trailed and had five student-athletes score in double figures as the Mountain Lions earned a 76-64 victory against California Baptist (2-1) tonight at the Gallogly Events Center. Abby Kirchoff led all scorers with 18 points.
Kirchoff also added a career-high eight assists and five rebounds. Sam Patterson led the Mountain Lions off the bench with seven rebounds as UCCS out-rebounded the Lancers 46-31.
UCCS scored on four of its first five possessions to take a five-point lead in the first four minutes, and then expanded it to a 10-point lead at 16-6 within the first seven minutes of the game. The Lancers answered back with a 13-3 run to tie the game at 19-19 with 10:44 to play in the half.
The Mountain Lions kept California Baptist from making any field goals for the next five minutes, but the Lancers stayed within five points of UCCS with a six-of-eight team performance from the free throw line in that span. The Mountain Lions put together a seven-point rally near the end of the half to take a 10-point lead, but the Lancers closed back to a four-point game at halftime, 37-33.
UCCS maintained its lead after halftime, but it was trimmed down to a point in the first five minutes of the second half. With the game at 51-49 for the Mountain Lions with 11:47 remaining, Kellie Krueger sparked an 11-point run that lasted the next five minutes to put UCCS ahead 62-49 with 6:30 left to play. The Mountain Lions kept their double-digit lead for the rest of the night for the 76-64 win.
Krueger scored 10 of her 15 points in the first half, while Jeri Pikul scored 11 of her 13 points in the second half. Tori Fisher finished with 10 points and went four-of-five from the field and scored double-digit points in back-to-back games for the first time in her career. Jessica Kienitz also scored 10 points for the Mountain Lions, helped by a two-of-two performance from the three-point line.
Up Next: The Mountain Lions will compete in the Metro State Classic on Nov. 22-23 in Denver, Colo. UCCS will open with former RMAC opponent Nebraska-Kearney at 5 p.m., on Friday at the Auraria Events Center.
