Kirchoff Pulls Down Career-High 12 Rebounds Against Bemidji State
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Abby Kirchoff pulled down a career-high 12 rebounds and scored 25 points as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (0-1) dropped its season-opener 85-76 to Bemidji State (2-0) tonight in the Gallogly Events Center.
The Mountain Lions out-rebounded the Beavers 49-40, and forced eight of Bemidji State's 17 turnovers off of steals. Kirchoff made three steals to lead both teams, including her final steal at midcourt with 3:39 remaining against point guard Morgan Lee, to setup the UCCS offense to cut into an eight-point game at the time.
Down by 11 points at halftime, the Mountain Lions cut it down to a five-point game twice in the final two minutes. After Kirchoff connected on back-to-back free throws with 1:35 remaining, UCCS regained possession off of an unforced Bemidji State turnover for an inbounds opportunity on its own side with 1:33 remaining.
After unable to convert on the possession, the Mountain Lions fouled on the next two Beaver possessions, and only trailed by six points, 79-73, with 46 seconds left after Bemidji State went one-of-four at the free throw line. UCCS got off two shots, but the Beavers collected the defensive rebound after the second shot and made the last six free throws to close out the game.
Tori Fisher finished with 15 points, 15 rebounds and two steals for career highs in rebounds and steals. Gabby Ramirez added 12 points and three assists for her seventh straight game with at least three assists dating back to the end of the 2012-13 season.
Up Next: The Mountain Lions remain at home for the UCCS Classic for a 5:30 p.m., game against California Baptist on Saturday. The Lancers defeated Western State 67-52 in the opening game of the classic.
