Mountain Lions Open Season Friday at Home with Bemidji State
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs, the preseason favorite to win the RMAC in 2013-14, will open the home and regular season on Friday night with former regional opponent Bemidji State. Tip-off is at 7:30 p.m., in the Gallogly Events Center as part of the UCCS Classic.
The Mountain Lions will be going for their third straight season-opening win against the Beavers, who opened their season at home on Tuesday night against Mayville State. Bemidji State also faced a pair of Division I teams, and led North Dakota by two points at halftime on Nov. 5.
UCCS went to overtime in its only Division I exhibition game of the season, but came on the short end of an 87-82 loss to Colorado State. Abby Kirchoff, the RMAC Preseason Player of the Year, scored 24 points and had the game-tying layup on the right baseline with 8.9 seconds remaining.
Sam Patterson, who missed the last half of last season because of a knee injury, is expected to return to the court tonight after coming off the bench for 15 minutes against Colorado State. She grabbed seven rebounds in that seven minutes to tie for the team lead.
In addition to the preseason No. 1 pick in the conference, the Mountain Lions are also receiving 17 votes in the preseason WBCA / USA Today Division II Top 25 poll. It's the most votes in program history after UCCS made its first appearance in program history last season.
Tonight's game will be available on Comcast Channel 20 in Colorado Springs, with play-by-play from M.J. Arjomandi. The same broadcast will be streamed through America One Sports, and fans can also follow live stats throughout the game.
