UCCS to Close out 2013 with Mustangs
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's basketball team will go for its first three-game winning streak since the 2011-12 season when the Mountain Lions (6-3 / 3-2 RMAC) close out the 2013 calendar year tonight against Western New Mexico (1-7 / 1-4 RMAC). Tip-off is set for 7:30 p.m., at the Gallogly Events Center.
UCCS is on its best start to the season in seven years, when the Mountain Lions started that season 7-2. A win would match the 7-3 start of the 2006-07 season and bring UCCS within one win of the win total from the 2011-12 season.
The Mountain Lions have had balanced scoring throughout the season with four student-athletes averaging double figures. Five Mountain Lions scored at 12 points or more last night against New Mexico Highlands, led by Tim Billingsley's 17 points. UCCS scored 92 points last night for its fifth 90-point game of the season, the most 90-point games through the first nine games in program history.
UCCS is leading the RMAC in total rebounds and defensive rebounds per game, and is second with a rebounding margin of +7.0 this season. The Mountain Lions have outrebounded its opponents by double-digits in six of the nine games this season and in every home game this season. Like the balanced scoring effort, UCCS has five student-athletes averaging at least four rebounds per game.
Western New Mexico and UCCS split last season's series, with both teams winning on the road. It was the first win of the season last year for the Mountain Lions, and a one-point loss when the Mustangs traveled to Colorado Springs on Blackout Night in Feburary. It's been a split series in each of the last three seasons.
The Mustangs won their first game of the season last Saturday against Western State. Brelan Berry and Marcos Castrillo are leading the Western New Mexico scoring effort, while Castrillo also leads the rebounding effort.
Fans can follow Saturday's game with live stats through GoMountainLions.com, live audio through USTREAM and live video through America One Sports. M.J. Arjomandi will call the play-by-play action on both the USTREAM and America One broadcasts.
