UCCS Men Return to Gallogly to Host Highlands Friday
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs will play at home for the first time in more than a month when the Mountain Lions (5-3 / 2-2 RMAC) take on New Mexico Highlands (5-3 / 2-2 RMAC) on Friday at 7:30 p.m., in the Gallogly Events Center.
A win will move the Mountain Lions to 6-3 and will be the best start through nine games since a 7-2 start in the 2006-07 season. A win would also be the first back-to-back conference wins since the 2011-12 season.
The Mountain Lions have won their last two home games against New Mexico Highlands. Derrick White led UCCS with 22 points and was one of five student-athletes with at least 10 points in an 88-73 home win against the Cowboys on Feb. 2, 2013.
White is coming off a career-high 31-point performance last Saturday night at Regis, and is leading a balanced Mountain Lion scoring offense this season. White is averaging 17.3 points per game, four points ahead of Alex Welsh's average and just less than six point ahead of Dalton Patten's average. Tim Billingsley and Darius Pardner are both just under the 10-point average at 9.5 and 9.2 points, respectively.
UCCS has scored 90 or more points in four of its first eight games of the season for the first time in program history and rank in the top quarter of NCAA Division II teams in scoring offense. But the offense has been matched with the RMAC's top three-point defense team, which is holding opponents with 27.9 percent and ranks in the top 15 percent in the nation.
New Mexico Highlands has been alternating wins and losses in the last six games. Mannie Cass is leading the Cowboys with 17.8 points per game and is shooting 51.2 percent from the field.
Fans can follow Friday's game with live stats through GoMountainLions.com, live audio through USTREAM and live video through America One Sports. M.J. Arjomandi will call the play-by-play action on both the USTREAM and America One broadcasts.
