White Scores Career-High 31 in Win at Regis
DENVER, Colo. - Derrick White scored a career-high 31 points and Alex Welsh added 21 points as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs earned a 90-78 win at Regis tonight in Denver. The Mountain Lions (5-3 / 2-2 RMAC) shot 51 percent from the field and outrebounded the Rangers (3-5 / 0-3 RMAC) by a 43-to-27 margin.
The lead changed five times and the teams both tied each other eight times in a back-and-forth first half. UCCS closed out the half on an 11-4 run to take a 42-35 halftime lead, fueled by six points by White during the run. The Mountain Lions shot 54 percent from the field in the half.
UCCS never trailed during the second half, but did let the Rangers make it a one-point game early in the half at 44-43 with 16:48 to play. The Mountain Lions responded with an eight-point run at that time and didn't look back en route to their fourth 90-point game of the season.
White's 31-point performance was the best for a Mountain Lion since Nick Weaver scored 35 against Western State on Jan. 17, 2009. He made 14 points at the free throw line, the sixth-best performance in program history, and added five rebounds and two blocked shots on defense.
Welsh went seven-of-10 from the field and matched his career-high in points. He led the Mountain Lions with eight rebounds in the best team rebounding performance of the conference season. Nolan Baker also finished with a career-high with 11 points.
