UCCS Starts Second Half Strong but Falls at Fort Lewis
DURANGO, Colo. - Derrick White recorded his first collegiate double-double with 24 points and 11 rebounds as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (3-2 / 0-1 RMAC) fell 87-75 to Fort Lewis (4-1 / 1-0 RMAC) tonight in Whalen Gymnasium. The game tonight was the RMAC opener for both teams.
White finished with a career-high in rebounds and with the ninth 20-point game of his career. The 24 points was the second-highest total in his career, behind the 28 points against Colorado State-Pueblo in the Downtown Classic in January.
Down by 19 points to Fort Lewis at halftime, 49-30, the Mountain Lions used a 19-7 run at the start of the second half to cut the game down to seven points at 56-49 with 15:56 to play. UCCS scored on seven of its eight possessions during that run, led by nine points from Alex Welsh on 3 three-pointers.
The Mountain Lions would pull within seven points again with 15:05 to play with a layup from Tim Billingsley, put wouldn't be able to pull closer in the rest of the game. UCCS shot 50 percent from the field and 58 percent from the three-point line in the second half.
True freshman TreShawn Wilford scored 12 points off the bench. Welsh finished with 11 points and has scored double-digit points in every appearance this season and in 10 of his last 11 games since last season.
UCCS finished with 41 percent from the three-point line throughout the game for its best performance of the season. The Mountain Lions also maintained its streak of not being outrebounded by an opponent this season.
Up Next: The Mountain Lions will travel to Adams State for an 8 p.m., game against the Grizzlies in Plachy Hall.
