Mountain Lions Improve to 2-0 with Win Against Panhandle
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Dalton Patten recorded his first collegiate double-double with 14 points and 12 rebounds and was one of four Mountain Lions to finish with 10 or more points as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs improved to 2-0 with an 87-71 victory against Oklahoma Panhandle State (0-3) tonight in the Gallogly Events Center. It's the first 2-0 start since the beginning of the 2006-07 season and the second 2-0 start in program history.
The Mountain Lions finished with 55 rebounds and seven blocked shots on the defense, and shot better than 40 percent from the field and 70 percent from the free throw line on the offense. The average winning margin of 26 points in the first two games is the best offensive start to a season in program history.
UCCS and Oklahoma Panhandle exchanged the lead four times and tied each other five times during the first 17 minutes of the first half, before the Mountain Lions closed the half on an 11-3 run to take an eight-point lead at halftime. Derrick White, an RMAC All-Preseason selection who was making his first appearance of the season, led both teams at halftime with 12 points.
The Aggies pulled within six points on two occasions in the second half, both around the midway point of the period, but the Mountain Lions maintained at least a 10-point lead through a majority of the half en route to the 87-71 victory.
The 55 team rebounds tied for the second most in UCCS history, and were the most since 55 against Western New Mexico on Dec. 5, 2009. In addition to Patten's double-double, White and Alex Welsh each finished one rebound shy of their own double-doubles.
Up Next: The Mountain Lions will close out the nonconference season at the Northwest Nazarene Classic in Nampa, Idaho, on Nov. 22-23. UCCS will take on the College of Idaho at 5 p.m. on Friday.07 season.
