Koehler Leads Mountain Lions to Season-Opening Win
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Alex Koehler earned his first career double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds off the bench to lead the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (1-0) to a 90-54 victory against Johnson & Wales (1-4) tonight in the Gallogly Events Center. It was the first season-opening win for the Mountain Lions since the 2006-07 season.
UCCS scored on its first three possessions and never trailed against the Wildcats. Five different Mountain Lions scored the first nine points, and scored six of those nine points inside the paint. Koehler reached his double-double by halftime with 11 points and 10 rebounds, while Dalton Patten and TreShawn Wilford each added eight points at the intermission.
The Mountain Lions never let the Wildcats pull within 20 points in the second half. UCCS shot 52 percent from the field in the half, and 68 percent from inside the three-point line. Patten went four-of-five from the field and scored nine second half points in seven minutes to lead the Mountain Lions.
Tonight's 36-point win was the largest margin of victory for the Mountain Lions since Dec. 10, 2011. The 90 points tonight were almost the most in a season-opener since a 96-91 win against Northern Colorado on Nov. 17, 2006.
Patten led both teams with 17 points and finished second on the team with six rebounds. Tim Billingsley scored 11 points in his first game as a Mountain Lion and Jake Campbell rounded out double-digit scorers with 10.
Up Next: UCCS remains at home on Saturday with a 7:30 p.m., game against Oklahoma Panhandle State. The Aggies are 0-2 after the Cameron University Tournament last weekend.
