UCCS Announces Men's Basketball Suspensions for First Four Games
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs announced today the suspension of seven men's basketball student-athletes, spread over the course of the first four games of the season, due to playing in an organized basketball competition outside of summer. The competition was a fundraising tournament played at Colorado Christian University in Lakewood, Colo.
UCCS self-reported the violation to the NCAA, and received approval to stagger the suspensions over the first four games of the regular season. NCAA bylaws typically require student-athletes serve the suspensions at the first available opportunity, but because of the number of student-athletes involved, the NCAA granted a UCCS request to stagger the suspensions to maintain safety of student-athletes.
The competition occurred at a fundraising tournament at Colorado Christian that took place after the playing season but before the end of the academic year and start of the summer break. Per NCAA Division II Bylaw 220.127.116.11, a student-athlete may participate in outside basketball competition during the summer, but per Bylaw 14.7.2, can't compete at any other time while representing UCCS in intercollegiate competition.
