Mountain Lions Face First Test of Season at Wyoming
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - With preseason projections the highest that they've been in four years, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's basketball team (0-0) will open the 2013-14 exhibition season on Thursday night with Division I University of Wyoming (0-0) at 7 p.m., in UW's Arena-Auditorium. It will be the first of two Division I exhibition games for a large number of newcomers to the Mountain Lion squad.
More than half of the UCCS student-athletes who will make the trip to Wyoming will be newcomers under second-year Head Coach Jeff Culver, although not new to either the UCCS program or to Culver. Alan Paul, who started 15 games for the Mountain Lions between the 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons, is projected to return to the starting lineup on Thursday. Jake Campbell started 27 games in Culver's final season at Johnson & Wales in the 2011-12 season before he transferred to UCCS.
Derrick White, the first RMAC All-Preseason pick for the Mountain Lions since Academic All-American Patrick Hannaway in 2006-07, will look to continue where he left off from his conference Freshman of the Year season. As a true freshman, he finished with the UCCS season record in free throws made, fourth in blocked shots records and eighth in total scoring. He was named to the Division II Bulletin All-Freshman Team.
Wyoming enters the game as the seventh pick in the Mountain West Conference preseason polls. Thursday will be the fifth meeting between the two teams and the first since an exhibition contest for UCCS on Nov. 10, 2007, when the Mountain Lions were within 10 points of the Cowboys with seven minutes to play.
Live stats through CBS College Sports' GameTracker will be available. Live video will also be available for free through the Mountain West Network.
