Mountain Lions Fall in Final Minute at Regis
DENVER, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's basketball team finished with four Mountain Lions as the Mountain Lions (5-20 / 5-16 RMAC) fell 80-79 to Regis (10-14 / 9-13 RMAC) tonight at the Regis Fieldhouse. The Mountain Lions shot 50 percent from the field during the game to finish with a field goal percentage of at least 50 percent for the third straight game.
UCCS used a 9-2 run during a four-minute period midway through the first half to take a 23-15 advantage with 8:57 left in the half. The Mountain Lions shot 17-of-32 for 53 percent and a 41-29 advantage against the Rangers at the halftime break. Brandon Applehans scored a season-high 11 points by halftime to lead both teams.
Alex Welsh scored the first four points of the second half for UCCS to expand the lead to 46-31 for the Mountain Lions. Regis gradually narrowed the gap to two points with four minutes remaining, down to one point with two minutes and tied the game with 20 seconds remaining. The Rangers made a three-pointer with two seconds remaining for an 80-77 advantage before Alex Koehler went to the line on a foul at the end of the game to close the final score to 80-79.
Derrick White finished with a team-high 16 points and went six-of-eight from the free throw line and move within three points of the UCCS season record for free throws in a season. His 153 free throws trails Patrick Hannaway's record from the 2005-06 season.
Jordan Carter scored 14 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Welsh and Applehans each finished with 13 points each.
Up Next: UCCS closes out the 2012-13 season at No. 2 Metro State in a 7 p.m., game in downtown Denver. The Roadrunners, who have already clinched the RMAC regular season championship, fell to Colorado State-Pueblo 70-69 earlier tonight.
