White Moves Into Second in Free Throw Records Against #22 Fort Lewis

By Jared Verner published February 16, 2013

DURANGO, Colo. - Derrick White went five-of-six from the free throw line to move into a tie for second in free throw season records as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (4-18 / 4-14 RMAC) fell to No. 22 Fort Lewis (17-4 / 14-4 RMAC) 83-66 tonight in Whalen Gymnasium. White and Alex Welsh both scored 17 points to lead the Mountain Lion offense.

Fort Lewis scored the first five points of the game and opened up a nine-point advantage at 13-4 with 13:20 left in the first half. The Skyhawks led by 13 points with 5:53 remaining in the period before the Mountain Lions closed out the half with a 14-4 run to close the gap to three points, 39-36, at halftime.

The run continued into the second half, when a three-pointer from Alex Koehler tied the game 56 seconds into the half at 39-39. The Mountain Lions took their first lead of the game on Welsh's first three-pointer of the season with 16:50 left to go in the game, and Darius Pardner provided the largest lead of the game for UCCS, 48-46, on a fastbreak layup with 15:31 left.

The Mountain Lions then suffered a five-minute scoring drought, broken by a jumper by Welsh before the under-10 media timeout. The jumper cut into a 10-point Skyhawk lead, and a layup from Welsh would make it a seven-point game with 9:25 remaining, but a 16-4 Fort Lewis run put the Skyhawks ahead 75-56 with 4:35 left.

White's five free throws improved his season total to 133 to tie Patrick Hanaway's mark from the 2006-07 season. He needs 23 free throws to tie Hanaway's record set in 2005-06. White finished with double-digit points for the 14th time in the last 15 games and recorded a season-high five assists.

Welsh scored 17 points for the third time this month and led the Mountain Lions with eight rebounds. He's led UCCS in rebounding seven times this season.

Darius Pardner went four-of-nine from the field for 11 points.

Up Next: UCCS returns home on Friday night for a 7:30 p.m. contest against Chadron State in the Gallogly Events Center. The Eagles (3-19 / 3-15 RMAC) were trailing Colorado Mines tonight 59-54 with three minutes left to go in that game in Chadron, Neb.
