Welsh Scores Career-High at CSU-Pueblo
PUEBLO, Colo. - Alex Welsh scored a career-high 21 points and Derrick White finished with 20 points as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (4-16 / 4-12 RMAC) let an early 11-2 lead slip away in a 81-72 loss to Colorado State-Pueblo (10-12 / 9-7 RMAC) tonight in Massari Arena. Nolan Baker also finished with eight rebounds to lead the Mountain Lions.
UCCS out-rebounded the ThunderWolves 46-38, for the fourth straight game with a rebounding advantage. Nolan Baker finished with eight rebounds to lead five Mountain Lions who finished with five or more rebounds.
The Mountain Lions held CSU-Pueblo without a field goal for nearly three minutes during an eight-point rally that provided an 11-2 lead for UCCS early in the game. The teams exchanged field goals to keep a nine-point lead on Nolan Baker's jumper with 13:52 remaining in the half. CSU-Pueblo put together an 18-0 run shortly after Baker's field goal.
UCCS narrowed a 13-point halftime deficit to nine points with 11 minutes to go and with four seconds left on a three-pointer from Darius Pardner. He scored all of his 15 points in the game during the second half to lead all scorers in the period.
Welsh went nine-of-19 from the field in his first 20-point game of the season. He's scored at least 15 points in the last three games and at least 10 points in 11 of the last 12 games. White's 20 points was his second straight 20-point performance and the sixth of his true freshman season.
Up Next: The Mountain Lions travel to Adams State Feb. 15 for an 8 p.m. game in Alamosa, Colo. The No. 14 Grizzlies (14-5 / 12-4 RMAC) lost 74-70 tonight at Western New Mexico.
