COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs will travel for the first time in more than a month, but men's basketball will look for the same result from its last road game in December when the Mountain Lions (2-11 / 2-7 RMAC) take on two-time defending RMAC champion Colorado Mines (8-5 / 5-4 RMAC) on Friday night in Lockridge Arena in Golden, Colo. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
The Mountain Lions have picked up their two wins in the last four games, and won their first game of the season in their last road game of 2012 in an 84-80 victory at Western New Mexico on Dec. 15. UCCS outrebounded the Mustangs by 20, 45-25, and contributed to the Mountain Lions' conference-leading rebound margin of +7.2 in RMAC games.
Derrick White has led UCCS in scoring in the last six games and is the top scoring freshman in the RMAC with 16.8 points per game. He's scored at least 10 points in nine of the last 10 games and scored at least 20 points in a four-game stretch from Dec. 14-Jan. 11. White is also leading the conference with 5.5 made free throws per game and is ninth with one blocked shot per game.
The two games this weekend against Colorado Mines and Colorado Christian represent the halfway point of the RMAC season, and the Mountain Lions sit one game out of a spot in the conference tournament. UCCS can make its first trip to the postseason since 2010 and the sixth in program history with a top eight finish in the standings.
Colorado Mines is 1-3 during the month of January, but it's a deceiving record based on its competition. The Orediggers lost on the road at Western State, 94-63 on Jan. 4, but the Mountaineers had their "big man" in Charles Joseph, who was injured with the Mountain Lions faced Western State last Friday. Colorado Mines also suffered losses to Colorado Mesa (75-56) and No. 2 Metro State (77-61). The win during the month came at home against Regis, 72-71, last Friday night.
Fans can follow the game online with video streaming through America One Networks and live stats from Colorado Mines. UCCS Radio will use the audio feed from Mines Internet Radio, with pregame, halftime and postgame analysis by the UCCS Radio staff.
