Tale of two halves has happy ending for UCCS Men
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - If the first-half was the worst of times the second-half was certainly the best of times for the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (2-10 / 2-6 RMAC) as they outscored Western State College University (7-6 / 6-3 RMAC) 43-26 in the second-half of their 78-66 victory over the Mountaineers Friday night at the Gallogly Events Center.
The first-half saw Western State grab a 40-35 lead going into the break due in large part to their outside shooting.
The old basketball adage goes you live and die by the three and Western State made a living that could have afforded several mansions in the first-half going seven-of-17 from behind the arc. Steve Aldridge went a scorching three-of-three to lead the way for the Mountaineers early.
Derrick White had a team-high 13 points at the break along with his freshman sidekick Alex Welsh who had eight points.
But in the second-half it was the best of times for UCCS as they outscored the Mountaineers 43-26 behind a huge half from sparkplug Darius Pardner who had 13 of his 16 points in the second-half. Pardner also added two steals.
The biggest swing of the second-half came with seven minutes left in the game as UCCS proceeded to go on a 10-0 run highlighted by a pair of spectacular Jordan Carter put backs. That run game the Mountain Lions their first lead of the second-half and they never relinquished it.
Another key for UCCS down the stretch was free throw shooting as they went 25-of-30 in the game for a boiling 83 percent.
Four Mountain Lions were in double figures in the contest with White (22), Pardner (16), Carter (15) and Welsh (10) leading the way.
Aldridge finished the night with almost as many points (21), as minutes (23) for Western State due to foul trouble.
