“Heartbreak classic” for Mountain Lion men
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Derrick White had a desperation 3-pointer graze off the rim and fall just short as time expired for the University of Colorado Colorado Springs (1-10 / 1-6 RMAC) against rival Colorado State University-Pueblo (4-9 / 3-4 RMAC) in a 85-83 loss at the Colorado Springs City Auditorium.
The court was blue, the scoreboard looked like a video game and the shot clocks were hard to find let alone see from the court. Trial and error was to be expected in what was dubbed the Inaugural Downtown Classic, hosted in downtown Colorado Springs at the City Auditorium.
UCCS started the game behind the eight ball as the Mountain Lions were assessed a technical-foul due to the shot-clock being out of position and not at its usually position atop the basket at each end of the court per NCAA rules.
In the end those two points made a world of difference in what came down to a one-possession game.
Paced by White's career-high 28 points, the Mountain Lions led the entire second-half until a Ryan Arel 3-pointer tied the game at 83 all with 51 seconds to play. Then at the other end of the court Alex Welsh was unable to connect on a close look at the basket with the Thunderwolves then taking over with 21 seconds on the clock.
CSU-Pueblo let most the clock run down before a back door cut by Nathan Tigner allowed him to draw a foul. Two free throws later and with a mere 3.7 seconds left in the game White heaved a desperation shot from 40 feet and came up short.
Being away from the Gallogly Events Center didn't seem to bother anyone on the UCCS side as the team shot 54.5 percent from the field in the game and connected on six-of-15 3-pointers at 40 percent.
Welsh, 19 points and nine rebounds, came within one rebound of a double-double and teammate Darius Pardner contributed 17 points off the bench.
Jordan Carter was the high efficiency man of the night scoring 11 points in only 19 minutes of action.
Arel led the Thunderwolves in scoring with 24 points, well above his season average of 8.2 points per contest.
