Mountain Lions look to extend their 2-0 conference record this weekend at home
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team will be back in action this upcoming weekend to conclude the four-game home-stand to start the 2012-2013 conference season. UCCS will host Metro State (2-4, 0-1 RMAC) Friday night, followed by Regis (2-3, 1-0 RMAC) on Saturday night.
The Roadrunners have won the previous 11 games against the Mountain Lions, dating back to Dec. 17, 2005. Metro won the last game 55-48 in January of last season. UCCS snapped a five game winning streak that the Rangers had prior to their last meeting as the Mountain Lions won 73-63 on Jan. 13, 2012.
UCCS has started this conference season 2-0 for just the third time since joining the RMAC in the 1997-1998 season. The Mountain Lions defeated the defending RMAC champions Fort Lewis 70-65 and Adams State 69-45 last weekend.
The Mountain Lions are currenlty outscoring their opponents by an average margin of 15.4 points per game. The team is led by sophomore guard, Abby Kirchoff, who is averaging 13.2 points per game with 4.8 rebounds.
Kirchoff was named the RMAC defensive player of the week after leading the team to those two conference wins. In the win against Fort Lewis, Kirchoff had game-highs of seven total rebounds, six defensive rebounds and six steals. She also added a game-high of 25 points in that game. In the two wins, Kirchoff averaged 4.5 defensive rebounds and 3.5 steals.
Senior Lauren Wolfinger needs just three more made 3-point shots to crack the top 10 for all-time 3-pointers in school history. She currently has 99 for her career.
Kellie Krueger is shooting the ball with great accuracy though through the first five games of the season as she is averaging 62.1 percent from the field, which ranks fifth in the RMAC.
The Mountain Lions love the long ball as they are currently first in the RMAC for 3-pointers made and in 3-point percent.
UCCS looks to continue executing the three point shot this weekend as they host Metro State and Regis. Both games have a tip-off time of 5:30 p.m.
