Mountain Lions Tip-Off the 2012-2013 Conference Season this Weekend at Home

By MJ Arjomandi published November 29, 2012

The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team opens up the conference season this weekend as they begin a four game home-stand. This weekend, UCCS (2-1) will play host to Fort Lewis (1-3) and Adams State (3-1).

The Mountain Lions will look for redemption this Friday as they take on the Fort Lewis Skyhawks in the season home-opener. The Skyhawks are the last team the Mountain Lions played in the 2011-2012 season as they defeated UCCS in the semifinal game of the 2012 RMAC Shootout. The Mountain Lions won the previous regular season meeting against the Skyhawks 84-78 on Feb. 11, 2012.

UCCS will be back in action Saturday night, as they take on the Adams State Grizzlies. The Grizzlies have won six out of the last seven games, but the Mountain Lions won the last regular season meeting 67-36 on Feb. 10, 2012.

The Mountain Lions are led on offense by guards Jeri Pikul and Abby Kirchoff, who are each averaging double figures in scoring through the first three games of the season. Pikul is averaging 11.3 points per game with 2.6 assists. Kirchoff leads the team with 12.7 points per game while adding 4.3 rebounds. Kirchoff also earned a spot on the 2012-2013 RMAC All-Preseason team.

Senior Lauren Wolfinger has made two 3-pointers this season, giving her 98 for her career. She now needs just four more made 3-point shots to crack the top 10 for all-time 3-pointers made in school history.

Wolfinger looks to add to her career total as the Mountain Lions look for another win to start the 2012-2013 conference season. UCCS started last season 4-1 which helped propel the team to their first post-season appearance in six season. The team has the opportunity to begin this season with that same 4-1 record if they can defend home-court this weekend against Fort Lewis and Adams State. Both games have a 5:30 p.m. tip-off.
