UCCS wins 2nd straight game by double digits to open the 2012-2013 season
ALAMOSA, Colo. - The University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball team wins the second straight game to open the 2012-2013 season as they defeat Northern New Mexico 73-42 at the Alamosa Tourism and Bankers Classic hosted by Adams State on Saturday. The Mountain Lions shot 38.5% from the field, 66.7% from the free throw line and went 5-20 from three, but dominated the boards recording 59 rebounds to the Eagles' 25, to help propel UCCS to a 31 point win.
Sophomore forwards Sam Patterson and Kellie Krueger led the way for UCCS in the first half. Patterson recorded eight points and five rebounds in the first half and finished with eight rebounds shooting 5-8 from the field and 3-4 from the free throw line for 13 points. Kellie Krueger put in four rebounds and six points with one assists in the first half and finished adding two more rebounds in the second half.
Junior guard Jeri Pikul also had a good first half as she four points with three assists and two rebounds. Pikul finished the game shooting a flawless 4-4 from the charity stripe with six points, four assists and four rebounds to help the Mountain Lions to a 34-18 lead at the half.
Sophomore guard Abby Kirchoff took over the second half offensively as she recorded 11 of her game-high 17. Kirchoff finished the game shooting 7-10 from the field, 3-4 from three and added three assists with two rebounds. Forward Brooke Baker also had a good second half as she put in seven rebounds and six points. Baker finished with a game-high nine rebounds and shot 6-8 from the free throw line.
The Mountain Lions also had great contributions from Gabby Ramirez, Jessika Kienitz, Shannon Kelly, and Hannah Knight. Ramirez finished with a game-high seven assists, adding five points and four rebounds. Kienitz had eight rebound and two points. Kelly recorded four points and three rebounds. Knight put in four points shooting 1-2 from the field and added three rebounds.
UP NEXT: UCCS (2-0) will travel to Canyon Texas this Tuesday to take on West Texas A&M (0-3). The Mountain Lion's trail in the all-time series against the Lady Buffs 4-2, but won the last game 66-62 on November 19, 2011.
