Mountain Lions Take on Third Ranked Team of Season Tonight at Home
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - For the third time in seven games, the University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's basketball will face a nationally-ranked opponent when the Mountain Lions (0-6 / 0-2 RMAC) take on No. 3 Metro State (5-0 / 1-0 RMAC) tonight at 7:30 p.m. in the Gallogly Events Center.
UCCS has fallen in the last three games by a combined eight points while putting up the best offensive numbers of the season in that span. The Mountain Lions have outrebounded each of their opponents in that span, committed fewer turnovers than their opponents in the last two games and made more field goals in the last two games.
While the NCAA doesn't compile a strength of schedule report, the Mountain Lions may arguably have one of the toughest schedules in the nation so far this season. Five of the six opponents have either been nationally ranked or are receiving votes this season (Winona State, Chico State, Fort Lewis) or are coming off a national tournament appearance (Bemidji State, Adams State). Tonight's opponent would fit into both categories as the third-ranked team in the nation and a national quarterfinalist last season.
Alex Welsh contributed to the scoring and rebounding effort for the Mountain Lions in the last two games with 12 points and 11.5 rebounds for UCCS. He recorded the first double-double of the season for UCCS against Fort Lewis last Friday night with 16 points and 13 rebounds, and followed with 10 rebounds against Adams State last Saturday night. He shot 73 percent from the field (eight-of-11) and brought down six offensive rebounds against the Skyhawks last week. Welsh has scored in double-digits in half of the games this season.
True freshman Derrick White has been a consistent scorer for the Mountain Lions with 14.7 points per game and has finished only one game under 10 points. He's averaging 17 points and shooting 40 percent from the field in the last three games.
Tonight's games will be available through live stats and through streaming video from America One Networks. M.J. Arjomandi will carry the play-by-play on the America One broadcast.
