COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The 2012-13 University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's basketball season unofficially begins Thursday night when Mountain Lions host Northern New Mexico in an exhibition contest at 8 p.m. in the Gallogly Events Center. It will be the first of two exhibition games for UCCS before the official start of the regular season on Nov. 9.

The game will come 10 days after the start of official team practices last Monday for the Mountain Lions, and will be the first game for Head Men's Basketball Coach Jeff Culver. He previously spent six seasons at Johnson & Wales and coached the Wildcats to three Association of Independent Institutions Conference championships.

Jake Darby, the leading scorer for UCCS last season with 307 points, returns for his junior season. He led the Mountain Lions in scoring four times last season. Darius Pardner, the third-leading scorer from last season, averaged 10.3 points per game and 11.5 points per game during the RMAC schedule.

It will be the first meeting between UCCS and Northern New Mexico in either exhibition or regular season action, but it's the seventh meeting for Culver. He's 6-0 against the Eagles from when he coached Johnson & Wales with an average winning margin of 10.8 points. Northern New Mexico launched its athletic programs in the 2009-10 season and are members of NAIA Division II.

Tonight's game will be available through video streaming from America One Networks for $8. Free live stats will be available at game time.
