UCCS men grab win over CCU
COLORADO SPRINGS - The final score did not accurately reflect how this game was played as Colorado Christian University made a late push to trim the final margin to 73-65 as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs snapped their 10-game losing streak Friday night at the GalloglyEvents Center.
Staring for UCCS was George Pollard who could have been shooting at a teacup Friday night and it wouldn't have mattered since everything the Colorado Springs native was throwing up found the bottom of the net on his way to a game-high 19 points.
No matter how close it got at the end though this win has to feel great, considering it was the Mountain Lion's first win in 42 days.
In what has become typical UCCS fashion, the Mountain Lions shot exceptionally well from 3-point range in the first-half going 5 of 9 before the break.
Leading the charge early was Pollard and Alex Koehler went a combined perfect 5 of 5 from the field, including 4 of 4 from 3-point land in the first-half that saw UCCS lead by as many as 11.
The second-half was a different story that saw Colorado Christina make a late charge that almost came full-circle if it had not been for the large 16 point lead the Mountain Lions built.
Anytime a team goes 9 of 18 from 3-point territory the odds of winning increase exponentially as was the case tonight for the Mountain Lions.
Jake Darby was the only other Mountain Lion in double-figures with 10 points to go with six rebounds. Joell Crawford had a business-like eight points and eight rebounds, as well.
Daniel Pilkington and Austin Wenger had 18 points apiece to lead the Cougars in scoring. Colorado Christian never led on the scoreboard in this one however and saw their record fall to 3-22 overall and 2-19 in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference.
The win starved Mountain Lions move to 8-19 overall and 7-14 RMAC with a season finally match-up tomorrow night against the Colorado School of Mines.
