UCCS Loses 8th Straight

Colorado Springs - The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs' men's basketball team dropped their eighth straight game, this time a 65-60 heartbreaker at the hands of the Fort Lewis Skyhawks.

One night after welcoming reigning RMAC defensive player of the week, Jamiko Verner and Adams State to the Gallogly Center, Fort Lewis brought the RMAC's reigning offensive player of the week, Matt Morris to town. He didn't disappoint either, Morris finished with a game high 35 points and looked well on his way to repeating as the conference's top offensive player of the week.

UCCS led much of the game and were even up by eight points at one point but in the end they just couldn't hold off the Skyhawks. Morris' 35 points were bolstered by nine apiece from Mike Matthews and Matt Billups, who is a cousin of former Denver Nugget and current Los Angeles Clipper, Chauncey Billups.

The Mountain Lions were riding a streak where they won six of seven games just before starting this eight game slide. In the seven games before the streak, UCCS was averaging 81.7 points per game. That number has fallen to an abysmal 69.5 points per game in the eight loses since. To put that into perspective, there are only four teams in the whole conference who score less than 69.5 points per game.

It wasn't all bad for UCCS though, they had three players in double digit points, led by Darius Pardner with 13. Kyle Clark added 12 points and Alex Koehler had 11. Pardner also had an amazing seven steals which is a season high for any Mountain Lion. In fact, the last time the Mountain Lions recorded more than seven steals as a team was all the way back on January, 7 when they had 12 against Colorado Mesa.

The loss drops UCCS to 7-17 as they head to Nebraska to play Chadron State and Nebraska Kearney before finishing up the season with back to back home games against Colorado Christian (one of the four teams scoring under 69.5 points per game) and Colorado Mines on February 24th and 25th.
