UCCS comes up on short in clash of styles as five-game win streak ends
GRAND JUNCTION - The Mountain Lions' five game winning streak came to an end Saturday as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs was knocked off 75-50 by the Colorado Mesa Mavericks at Brownson Arena.
UCCS dropped to 5-4 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play (6-9 overall) and is in prime position in the standings since nine of its final 13 games will be at home.
Saturday's game was a classic clash of styles. The small, uptempo Mountain Lions attempted 22 3-pointers, making eight, and tried to push the pace with little success. The bigger Mavericks pounded the ball inside, outscoring UCCS 44-16 in the paint. They also had a dominant 45-28 rebounding advantage and outshot the Mountain Lions 53.8 percent to 28.8 percent.
Post players Michael Bear (18) and Colton Burgon (17) combined for 35 points on 13-of-18 shooting for Colorado Mesa (8-6, 5-4 RMAC). UCCS' top two inside players, on the other hand, spent much of the game languishing on the bench with foul trouble. Kyle Clark saw just 16 minutes and Jordan Carter 12.
UCCS led by as many as 10 when a George Pollard 3-pointer made it 23-13 with 8:49 remaining in the first half. For the balance of the half, though, the Mavericks to the tune of 24-9, including a 8-0 run to end the period during which six came from the foul line.
That run was just the beginning. One minute into the second half, Colorado Mesa went on a 14-point run, 12 of which were scored in the paint, to take a 56-38 lead. The Mountain Lions never threatened afterward.
George Pollard and Darius Pardner led UCCS with 11 and 10 points respectively. Clark and Matt Heydman added eight points each while Joell Crawford had a team-best five rebounds.
