Darby, Isaac lead Mountain Lions to fifth straight win
GUNNISON - Jake Darby scored 19 points and Jeff Isaac hit a pair of clutch shots as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs win its fifth straight game with a 66-62 victory over the Western State Mountaineers Friday evening at Paul Wright Gym.
With the score tied at 60 and just 51 seconds remaining, Isaac knocked down a short jumper. After a Western State turnover, Isaac put in a layup to make it 64-60 with 28 seconds showing on the scoreboard.
That second hoop forced the Mountaineers to foul after a missed shot, after which Darius Pardner made a pair of free throws. A late hoop by Western State's Weylan Towns provided the final margin.
Isaac finished with 14 points while Darby added five rebounds and three assists to his total. George Pollard and Pardner each had 10 points and Kyle Clark had a team-best nine rebounds and a pair of blocked shots.
UCCS improved to 6-8, 5-3 in Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference play. Western State dropped to 4-9, 2-7 RMAC.
Towns led all scorers with 24 points on 11-of-14 shooting. Alex Hart grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for the Mountaineers.
UCCS shot just 38.5 percent from the field. It was the third time during the Mountain Lions' five-game winning streak that they won while shooting 40 percent or less.
Western State led wire-to-wire in a sluggish first half in which UCCS shot a miserable 29 percent from the field. The Mountaineers led by as many as nine but settled for a 24-23 edge at the intermission.
UCCS scored the first seven points of the second half to take a six-point lead. Western State regained the lead, though, as Kairo Rochford scored seven straight points - five from the foul line - to go up 41-39 with 10 minutes remaining.
The score was tied seven times and neither team led by more than four until Pardner's final-seconds foul shots put UCCS up by six.
