Poor shooting sinks UCCS women

ALAMOSA, Colo. - A slow start and a miserable shooting night doomed the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs women's basketball team to its second loss in as many nights as the Mountain Lions were beaten 66-49 by the Adams State Grizzlies Saturday evening at Plachy Hall.

UCCS (4-3, 0-2 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) shot a horrid 25.9 percent from the field and 59.3 percent from the foul line. UCCS came into the game shooting 44.2 percent from the field and an RMAC-best 79 percent on free throws.

Adams State (2-4, 1-1 RMAC) shot 50 percent from the field, including 58.3 percent on 3-pointers, and 85 percent from the foul line.

The Mountain Lions missed four shots and had three turnovers in their first seven possessions to stake Adams State to a 10-0 lead. After Kassie Stratton got UCCS on the board with a 3-pointer, the Grizzlies scored the next seven points for a 17-3 lead. The deficit would remain in double digits the rest of the way.

Four consecutive free throws by Danielle Brown cut the gap to 51-41 with 7:41 remaining. Adams State answered with a nine-point run shortly thereafter to end any threat.

Brown led the Mountain Lions with 14 points, seven rebounds and six steals. Her twin sister, Jessica Brown, added eight points as did Ashley Miller.

Caitlin Boal led Adams State with 22 points, while Marissa Peterson added 16 and Chloe Cable had 13. Cable and Boal each had eight rebounds and Jamonica Hudgins had five assists.
