Women's basketball signs two recruits
University of Colorado Colorado Springs women's basketball coach Corey Laster announced Wednesday that he had signed two players to National Letters of Intent during the NCAA's early signing period. Joining the Mountain Lions for the 2012-13 season will be Kai Brown of Lewis-Palmer High School and Gabby Ramirez of Roosevelt High School in Johnstown.
A 6-foot-2 forward, Brown averaged 15 points and 8.3 rebounds per game as a junior for the Rangers. A Metro League All-Defensive Team member, she led Colorado Class 4A and was 17th nationally in blocked shots with 5.2 per game.
"She has a tremendous upside and brings a strong work ethic; Kai is always looking to improve her game," said Laster. "She is extremely intelligent and picks things up easily. I was impressed with her ability to run the floor and versatility as a player. She can play inside and outside at 6-2.
"I think Kai is someone who is excited to be at UCCS whom I expect to have a tremendous impact on our program. She comes from a great family and we are lucky to have her them all a part of our UCCS family."
Ramirez was a second-team All-Colorado Class 4A selection by the Denver Post this past season and was also named the All-Area Player of the Year. A point guard, she was the Tri-Valley League's Player of the Year.
"Gabby plays with great passion and is a true leader on the court," said Laster. "She can be quiet off, but truly comes to life when she is competing. She has a high basketball IQ and I expect her to be an immediate help at the point guard spot.
"She will be a great teammate and someone who can change the flow of the game. Gabby is fun to watch and someone who I feel very fortunate to have coming to UCCS."
The pair will join a very strong returning nucleus. UCCS has just four seniors on its 2011-12 roster (Jessica Brown, Danielle Brown, Ashley Miller and Payden Ackerman).
