UCCS grabs quality win over West Texas A&M

COLORADO SPRINGS - Jessica Brown scored 16 points to go along with a team leading six assists and five steals as the University of Colorado Colorado Springs Women's basketball team held off West Texas A&M 66-62 Saturday night at the Gallogly Events Center.

In a back-and-forth game that saw 17 ties and lead changes, the Mountain Lions defense was key as they held the Lady Buff's to 40.8 percent shooting from the floor. The only real offensive success West Texas A&M had in the first-half came on desperation 3-point attempts as they hit four of them with the shot-clock winding down.

"We did a great job of covering for each other. We talk a lot about helping with our man-to-man help defense but it's not only helping the person next to you, it's also someone helping the helper. So I thought our defensive rotations were really good tonight," said UCCS coach Corey Laster. "We had to make some big plays to get a lead in the first-half, so I was really happy with the way we battled."

With 2:11 remaining in the game, UCCS grabbed its largest lead of the night on a pair of Jessica Brown free-throws to make the score 62-54. However, an ensuing 6-0 run by West Texas A&M, capped with a fast-break layup by Devin Griffin, cut the lead to just two with 51 seconds remaining.

With the game on the line late coach Laster put the ball in the Brown's more than capable hands and let her go to work.

Brown answered by breaking down the defense to set-up Hannah Knight for an easy layup that made it 64-60 with 30 seconds remaining.

Poor clock management by West Texas A&M then saw 25 seconds melt-off before they answered with a score of their own. But it was too late as a pair of free-throws by Danielle Brown made it the final score of 66-62.

Jessica, her sister Danielle and Abby Kirchoff combined to score 46 of UCCS' 66 points, accounting for almost 70 percent of the offense. Kirchoff was the Mountain Lions leading scorer on the night as the freshman poured in 19 points to go with four rebounds.

"It's the type of basketball game where you're playing a good team, a very physical team and we were able to pull it out with some key shots by the twins (Jessica and Danielle Brown) and Abby Kirchoff," said Laster. "The freshman played really well for us," said Laster.
Lacee Logan led West Texas A&M (0-2) in points with 13 while Chontiquah White led in rebounds with nine.

"(It was a) great win against a great program," said Laster. "West Texas has been doing it for a long time and we knew that there were some challenges for us in that basketball game that we were prepared for, so I was happy really to come away with a win in the early part of the season."

A tough early schedule for UCCS has seen it play three opponents receiving votes in the top 25 and walk away with an impressive 2-1 record. The schedule doesn't get an easier for UCCS when they take on no. 20 Tarleton State in the Clarion Inn Thanksgiving Classic in Grand Junction next weekend.
