Fighting Saints outlast Mountain Lions
SALT LAKE CITY - Andy Garland had 19 points and nine rebounds to lead the Carroll Fighting Saints to a 73-63 victory over the University of Colorado Colorado Springs Friday afternoon at Behnken Field House.
Byago Diouf added 18 points for Carroll (4-3) and Jordan Weirick had 15.
Jordan Carter, making his first start of the season, led the Mountain Lions (1-4) with 12 points. Freshman Darius Pardner added 10 points and matched George Pollard for the team lead in assists with three. Jeff Isaac had nine points and a team-high four rebounds.
The Saints outrebounded UCCS 39-26, allowing them to attempt nine more field goals. That differential proved pivotal as the teams shot very similar field goal and free throw percentages.
After closing the half down 31-29, UCCS surrendered the first 12 points of the second half to dig itself a hole from which it couldn't escape.
The deficit grew to as many as 19 before a late run cut it to eight with less than a minute remaining. A pair of free throws provided the final margin.
Carroll did a good job frustrating the Mountain Lions' leading scorers. Matt Heydman, Damar Hill and Alan Paul came into the game averaging 14.5, 11.5 and 11.3 points per game respectively. Friday they were limited to two, three and three.
It was the first game of the Westminster Thanksgiving Classic. UCCS will play the host Westminster Griffins on Saturday.
