UCCS men's basketball signs pair from Colorado
University of Colorado Colorado Springs men's basketball coach Russ Caton announced Monday the signing of two Colorado high school players to National Letters of Intent. Joining the Mountain Lions for the 2012-13 season will be Alex Welsh from Pomona High School and Brandon Applehans from Standley Lake High School.
A 6-foot-7 forward, Welsh is a versatile player who can score from anywhere on the floor. A second-team all-state selection, he averaged 21.4 points, 9.5 rebounds and three blocked shots per game while shooting 64 percent from the field this past season. Heading into his senior season, he has already scored over 1,000 career points for the Panthers.
"This guy is the whole package," said UCCS coach Russ Caton. "We are excited to bring a top Colorado kid like Alex into the program. He is going to fit in nicely with the group we have now."
Applehans is the kind of dynamic, shooting guard that excels in the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference. The 5-foot-10 Applehans was an all-conference and all-state honoree this past season after averaging 20.2 points while shooting better than 40 percent from 3-point range and hitting 88 percent of his free throws. That latter number is significant because Applehans has shown a talent for getting to the foul line and was a school-record 18-for-18 in one game last year.
"Brandon is a hard working, scoring guard, two things we can't get enough of here at UCCS," said Caton. "Brandon is a class act all the way around and I'm glad to have him join our Mountain Lion program."
The pair represent two of the most significant prospects ever signed by UCCS during the NCAA's early signing period.
"Both our early signee's are guys you wish you could use as soon as they sign their NLI's," said Caton. "We will be anxiously awaiting their arrival next fall."
