UCCS men picked 12th in preseason basketball coaches' poll
The University of Colorado Colorado Springs was picked to finish twelfth out of 14 teams by the RMAC preseason coaches' poll. No UCCS player was selected for the RMAC's preseason all-conference team.
The coaches ranked conference teams from 1-14, omitting their own team. The points were then added to determine the predicted finish with the lowest point total being the top pick.
Metro State, coming off a tremendous 22-8 season and two returning preseason all-conference selections (Reggie Evans, Jonathan Morse) was the top pick by RMAC coaches with 20 points. Colorado Mines was tabbed to take second overall with 25 points. Both of those teams were ranked in the top 20 nationally.
Those two were followed by Adams State (40), Colorado Mesa (59), Fort Lewis (59), New Mexico Highlands (78), Nebraska-Kearney (85), Western New Mexico (89), CSU-Pueblo (106), Chadron State (123), and Western State (135).
Then was UCCS at the number twelve spot with 136 points followed closely by Regis (156), and Colorado Christian (163).
UCCS coach Russ Caton, who has guided the Mountain Lions to the playoffs in two of his four seasons at the school, returns just four players from last season's team. Starters Alan Paul and Damar Hill are back, as are Jeff Isaac and Jordan Carter. The newcomers include Jake Darby, who was the Heartland Conference co-Freshman of the Year in 2008-09 at Newman University, and several junior college transfers headed by 6-foot-11 center Kyle Clark.
The Mountain Lions will play exhibition games against two Division I teams, Weber State and Boise State on Monday and Tuesday before opening the season at home against Winona State on Friday November 11th.
