Versatile Heydman latest to sign with UCCS men's basketball
University of Colorado at Colorado Springs men's basketball coach Russ Caton continued to add to his 2011 recruiting class Friday when he announced he had received a National Letter of Intent from 6-foot-5 Matt Heydman.
Heydman will be a junior in 2011-12, having played two seasons at Dodge City (Kan.) Community College. Heydman averaged 5.1 points and 2.5 rebounds for the Conquistadors this past season and showed the ability to play all over the court. He also showed range, making 20 3-pointers.
"Matt is the versatile player that I've been looking for," said Caton. "We expect him to play any and every position for us."
Before playing at DCCC, Heydman was a member of the powerful Holcomb (Kan.) High School team that went 21-3 and 10-0 in league play during his senior season. Heydman averaged 12.9 points per game as a senior, shooting 50.4 percent from the field, while also getting 6.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocked shots per game.
"His basketball skill, athleticism, and work ethic are going to make him a very exciting player to watch," said Caton. "Coach (Brady) Trenkle had great things to say about Matt. His team-first mentality is going to make him a great guy to have around."
