Mountain Lion Basketball to Host Pair of Nebraska Schools This Weekend
The UCCS Mountain Lions will host the University of Nebraska-Kearney Lopers and Chadron State College Eagles this weekend at the Gallogly Event Center on the UCCS campus. The Mountain Lion men and women will first play the Lopers on Friday, January 20th and then the Eagles on Saturday, the 21st. The women play at 5:30 pm followed by the men at 7:30 pm both nights.
The Mountain Lions have spent the majority of their young season on the road. Tonight's games mark just the 9th home game for the men and only the 7th home game for the women (out of 16 games each for both teams).
The Mountain Lion women come into the game tonight with a 9-7 overall record, and 5-6 in RMAC play. UCCS ladies can control their playoff destiny at this point, currently 6th in RMAC standings. UNK and Chadron State both bring in conference records of 4-7 and the Lady Mountain Lions are looking for a weekend sweep to shoot them up the standings and further strengthen their playoff hopes. To do so, the Lady Mountain Lions will need to make sure they contain UNK's Debi Johnson, whose 15.1 ppg is good for 4th best in the conference.
The UCCS men continue to feel the rejuvenation of their up-tempo, exciting style of play winning 6 of their last 8 conference games. At 6-5 in RMACplay, the men's team is in prime position to continue hunting for the post season. Friday night's contest against UNK (9-5, 7-4 RMAC) is particularly critical as UNK is currently one-game ahead of the Mountain Lions for 4th place in the conference standings. This is important because the top 4 teams in the conference receive 1st round home games in the RMAC playoffs. The Loper's bring in a solid post presence in Mike Dentlinger who is currently averaging 14.7 ppg and 5.9 rpg. A win Friday night over the Lopers would be huge if a tie breaker scenario comes into play for post season standings. Saturday night's game will match the Mountain Lions against the Eagles of Chadron State College (4-11, 4-7 RMAC) who are coming in on a bit of a hot streak winning their last 2 conference games. Chadron, who is as unpredictable as any team in the conference, is extremely athletic and their center Moala Tautuaa, has the reputation as one of the best dunkers in the conference.
Make sure to come out and support your Mountain Lions!
