Black Hills State Knocks Off UCCS
SPEARFISH, S.D. â€" A cold-shooting first half and a huge free throw disparity doomed the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs to a 93-70 defeat at the hands of the Black Hills State Yellowjackets Tuesday evening at the Donald E. Young Center.
The Mountain Lions will complete their participation at the Perkins Classic, hosted by Black Hills State, with Wednesdayâ€TMs game against South Dakota Mines.
UCCS struggled from the field in the first half, hitting just 32.1 percent overall and missing all seven of its 3-point attempts. Black Hills State (10-4) countered with 53.3 percent shooting overall, including 7-of-13 from long range. The result was a 46-21 Yellowjackets lead at the half.
The lead built in the first half was protected from the foul line in the second. Black Hills State was awarded 29 free throw attempts in the second period, 22 of which were converted. That was enough to counter the Mountain Lionsâ€TM 51.2 percent second-half shooting.
For the game, Black Hills State outscored UCCS by 23 points from the foul line, which matched the margin of victory.
Cain Atkinson led the Yellowjackets with 34 points on 10-of-14 shooting, including 5-of-6 on 3-pointers. He also made all nine of his free throw attempts. Luke Enos added 17 points.
Scott Sublousky led five players in double figures with 13 points for UCCS (2-8). Brent Jones added 12 points, followed by Ben Feilmeier with 11 and Cole Smith and Damar Hill with 10 each. Smith had a game-high eight rebounds and Hill had four assists.
