Mountain Lions get the Lowe-down in grabbing victory over Mesa State
COLORADO SPRINGS â€" Mallory Lowe had a career-high 12 rebounds to go with her nine points and two blocked shots to lead the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs to a 75-62 victory over the Mesa State Mavericks Friday evening at the Lionsâ€TM Den.
Jazzmin Awa-Williams led the Mountain Lions (6-8, 4-2 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference) with 14 points. Payden Ackerman added 12 points, while Janean Jubic had a game-high six assists.
Stephanie Delgado led Mesa State (3-12, 0-7 RMAC) with 18 points, nine rebounds and three blocked shots.
Mesa State opened with an effective man press that managed to slow down the UCCS running game. With the Mountain Lions leading by three and 13:39 remaining in the half, they started breaking the press and getting fast break buckets. Over the next three minutes, UCCS put together a 16-6 run that included five layup field goals.
The Mavericks trimmed the lead down as far as six in the second half and were trailing by just seven when UCCS went on a 20-7 run to go up 69-49 with 5:45 remaining. The run was fueled by four steals, two by Ackerman, as the Mountain Lions began jumping the passing lane.
The Mountain Lions shot 44.1 percent from the field and are now 4-2 this season when shooting over 40 percent. Since coach Jessika Caldwell became coach prior to the 2005-06 season, UCCS is 25-10 when hitting at least 40 percent of its field goal attempts.
