UCCS stays in playoff hunt with win over Regis
COLORADO SPRINGS â€" The University of Colorado at Colorado Springs remained in the thick of the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference playoff race with a 92-91 victory over the Regis Rangers Friday evening at the Lionsâ€TM Den.
The Mountain Lions (10-16, 10-8 RMAC) will qualify for postseason if they beat Metro State on Saturday night. Should UCCS lose to Metro, it will need Colorado Mines to lose its game against Nebraska-Kearney in order to advance.
Ben Feilmeier led UCCS with 24 points Friday, while Jordan McClung and Frank McCollum each added 18 and Scott Sublousky had 10. McCollum grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds for his fourth double-double of the season. Chris Fernandez and Jordan McClung each had four assists.
Matt Rosinski led Regis (7-20, 4-15 RMAC) with 25 points. Andy Pokorny and Gabriel Green each added 11.
The Mountain Lions led by as many as 11 in the second half, but a 7-0 run by the Rangers cut the lead 70-66 with five minutes remaining. Less than a minute later, a 3-pointer by Pokorny cut the deficit to three at 72-69.
Regis kept up the pressure, but UCCS was able to respond by making 11 of its final 14 free throw attempts. A 3-pointer by John Everhart as time expired cut the final margin to one, but Regis never possessed the ball behind by fewer than three in the second half.
UCCS overcame 20 turnovers by outshooting Regis 50 percent to 44 percent and by holding a 33-19 advantage in made free throws.
Despite the close final and nip-and-tuck final five minutes, Regis never led or tied the game.
